Artist:THE FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON
Title: ACCELERATOR
Title: PAPUA NEW GUINEA TRANSLATIONS
Label: Hypnotic Records
Link:http://www.futuresoundoflondon.com
Root: UK/ Electronica
In the beginning of the ever expanding universe
was the big bang. No, we're not talking about the 5 billion years
old astro-physical phenomenon, but 1992, when an elusive tandem
(Gary Cobain and Brian Dougans) dropped on the dance
scene under the moniker the Future Sound Of London and changed
the face of modern music forever. What had been brain numbing thumping
hardcore industrial beats suddenly became evolutive and melodic
progressions, mixing dubbed up bass lines with keyboards from the
early Chicago House sound, and painting psychedelic mindscapes through
cleverly sampled loops. Accelerator thus became the point of origin
of almost any electronica sub genre ever since the word "techno"
got replaced by ambient, dub, progressive house, trance, etc...
Early mainstream exposure came when the first single "Papua
New Guinea" was featured on the soundtrack of Cool World,
hypnotizing audiences with operatic mantras sampled from Dead
Can Dance's diva Lisa Gerard. This 10 year anniversary
deluxe edition is comprised of two CDs, the original material and
a 10 track mix anthology featuring the reworks of Blue State,
Hybrid, Satoshi Tomiie, Andrew Weatheral, and
more, testify to how far ahead of the game FSOL really was,
and how their inventions remain relevant and timeless even today.
Its companion, "Translations" expands for over
54 minutes on variations of themes from Papua New Guinea, restructured
into an 8 track masterpiece of studio wizardry.

Artist: MARIANNE FAITHFUL
Title: KISSING TIME
Label:Virgin Records
Link: http://www.virginrecords.com/
Root:UK/ Pop-Rock
Don't talk to a lady who aged gracefully about
botox. Like a modern day Marlene Dietrich, the dame of the
60's british invasion gets her rejuvenation cure from hanging with
the young studs, namely Beck, Damon Alban of Blur
and Gorillaz, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins,
Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and Dave Stewart of
Eurythmics, who have all performed and helped produce "Kissing
Time", Marianne Faithful's offering to the 21st. century.
Her husky whispers draw one closer, and conjure up the bittersweet
taste of passion and intimacy with a quasi autobiographic quality,
with songs tainted with nostalgia for friends and lovers gone, and
lust for those yet to come. The groovy electro pop treatment of
the production infuses the retro chic of the ballads with modern
glam, making Kissing Time an emotionally compelling tribute to love,
sex and other human afflictions.

Artist: KING BRITT PRESENTS: SCUBA
Title: HIDDEN TREASURES
Label: Om Records
Link: http://www.omrecords.com
Root: US/ Dance
Hanging on the top branch of Gilles Peterson's
worldwide family tree, King Britt surveys a kingdom that
spans over a decade of soul, jazz, hip hop and house experimentation.
From his days as Digable Planet's DJ to neo funk of Sylk
130, to the release of Hidden Treasures under his dance producer
namesake Scuba, Philly's own ups the ante for the title of
most creatively diverse and prolific producer of his generation
. Compiling rare remixes for the likes of 4 Hero, Tweaker
(featuring David Sylvian), Fantastic Plastic Machine,
U.F.O., I:Cube, as well as original productions featuring
Vikter Duplaix, Britt establishes a unique production signature,
warm, luscious and dreamy, where intricate sonic textures arouse
the senses at every turn. Trance indusive psychedelics play counterpart
to a unique blend of house, broken beat, latin and tribal rhythms,
in a unique and distinctive approach to every track that escapes
any generic format. More than a bubbly journey under water, Scuba
metaphorically opens the doors of perception to a beautiful alternate
reality, where the soul finds exctasy in a world of harmony.

Artist: THE SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA
Title: UN GRAN DIA EN EL BARRIO
Label: Rope A Dope Records
Link: http://www.ropeadope.com/
Root: US/ Salsa
"A great day in the neighborhood"
is a record of historical significance, a testimony to the Puerto
Rican and Cuban cultural heritage, which in the 60's saw boogaloo,
mambo, and modern salsa emerge from hundreds of New York clubs and
forever change the American musical landscape. Overshadowed by the
soul explosion championed by James Brown, this harlem neighborhood
became the breeding ground for the nuyorican experience, where few
prodigal sons like Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri
rose to the limelight, while countless unsung heroes remained in
the obscure alleys of a bygone era. The 13 piece Spanish Harlem
Orchestra led by world famous pianist and arranger Oscar
Hernandez, does to Salsa what the Buena Vista Social Club
did to Cuban Son, raising it from its ashes by paying tribute to
its roots and ancestry, with outstanding performances by legends
Ruben Rodriguez, Jimmy Sabater and Bobby Allende.
With influences reaching in every aspect of modern music from Marc
Anthony to Carlos Santana, Spanish Harlem had yet to
be credited for the importance of its legacy. Now the neighborhood's
sons are doing their father justice.

Artist: KESTON AND WESTDAL
Title: SUPER STRUCTURE BABY
Label: 100 Bucks Music
Link: http://www.kestonandwestdal.com
Root: US/ Downtempo Jazz Electronica
Out of the roof of the midwest comes a downtempo
act with enough stylistic perks to leave LTJ Bukem wondering
why they are not on his Earth compilation series. How John
Keston, a british expatriate came to Minneapolis to mingle his
Rhodes keyboards with Bay area bass player Nils Westdal and
drummer Joshua Herbst may lack mystic and luster, but their
project has the backbone of other established electronic jazzheads
like Squarepusher and Martin, Medesky and Woods. The
organic feel of Super Structure Baby is owed to its live instrumentation,
keeping funk and jazz at the root of its downtempo, drum and bass
explorations. Escaping the sometimes repetitive song structure of
the genre, intricate themes lead the listener through the moods
and cinematic journey of a film noir, from the comfort of a smokey
lounge to the grit of abandoned urban landscapes. The laid-back
approach to their arrangements demonstrates a remarkable assurance
and maturity for such a young act, while the minimalistic jazz progressions
leave enough space for the music to expand in the listeners mind.
Having yet to be discovered by distributors, Super Structure Baby
is only available through their website.

Artist: AQUANOTE
Title: THE PEARL
Label: Naked Music/Astralweks
Link: http://www.naked-music.com/
Root: US/ Deep House
Ever since its pairing up with Astralwerks,
San Francisco's Naked Music has unleashed an arsenal of releases
using seductive grooves to woo unsuspecting audiences into submission.
The latest weapon of choice in this hedonistic coup d'etat comes
from Gabriel Rene, aka Aquanote, a name ever present on the sleeve
notes of Naked's early compilations. A stunning debut that dares
to go beyond the established conventions of the deep house sound,
The Pearl explores the relationship between house, disco, R&B,
soul and latin jazz, with smooth and sexy melodies designed to get
your groove on at all cost. No Naked Music record would be complete
without sensual muse Lisa Shaw, who shares her vocal talents
with singers Zoe Ellis, Caitlin and Omega,
adding emphasis to songwriting on an otherwise dance floor oriented
format. Gabriel Rene shares his good vibes like a magic carpet
ride on a journey to an idealistic oasis, a secret hide out where
the pearl, an expression of love's purest form, begs to be discovered,
away from an unforgiving world.

Artist: RECLOOSE
Title: CARDIOLOGY
Label: Planet E Communications
Link: http://www.planet-e.net
Root: US/ Broken Beat
Detroit's industrial landscape has for years
been the breeding ground for a cooler, more abstract and technological
approach to dance music than the soulful Chicago house sound. Local
popular heroes include legendary names like Derrick May,
Juan Atkins, and the godfather of Techno himself : Carl Craig.
Recloose(a.k.a. Matthew Chicoine) is the next generation,
the heir of over a decade of dance music, global networks with access
to anything anywhere, who takes the Detroit sound through new evolutionary
steps using cross pollination with the Jazzanova Compost Records
sound and references to minimalist innovator Matthew Herbert.
The sound of Cardiology is warm and soulful, with a multi layered
production that uses both samples and live instrumentation, building
up around funky basslines and syncopated rhythms. This hybrid features
collaborations with Paul Randolph (Innerzone Orchestra),
Rayce Biggs (Was Not Was), Dwele, Colin
Stetson (Tom Waits) and many others. Describing his creative
approach as constantly shape shifting, who knows what sound may
influence Recloose on his next musical journey, but his relocation
to New Zeland may blur stylistic boundaries even further.

Artist: CAM
Title: SOULSHINE
Label: Inflamable Records
Link: http://www.inflamable.com/
Root: France/ Acid Jazz
Born Laurent Daumail in 1973, DJ Cam
was raised in Paris squeezed between his mother's strict Classical
fervor and his father's addiction to Jazz. Claiming to love Hip
Hop like Madonna loves sex, it was the jazz inspired breaks
of DJ Premier and Gang Starr that inspired him the
most. In the course of the 90's DJ Cam imposed himself as one icon
(the son) of the holy trinity of abstract hip hop, alongside DJ
Shadow (the father) and DJ Krush (the holy ghost). Soulshine
marks a new chapter, dropping the DJ to become Cam, the composer
and arranger of a fine slice of smooth Acid Jazz, where sampling,
beat construction and scratching flirt with live brass, flutes,
keys, guitars, percussion and bass. In addition, an international
cast of performers lend their vocal support, from the sensual female
vibes of Anggun, Inlove and China, the funky
jive of Cameo, The rhymes of Gang Starr's MC Guru
and Afu Ra, and the neo-soul Atlanta sensation Donnie,
dubbed my many to be the new Stevie Wonder, while DJ Premier
and Kid Loco both lay it down on the remix tip. St Germain
it isn't, and using abstract hip-hop as a foundation, Cam departs
from other acid Jazz classic acts such as the Groove Collective,
The Young Disciples or the Soulsonics, to brew is
own blend of mad blunted jazz.

Artist: DJ JAZZY JEFF
Title: THE MAGNIFICENT
Label: BBE Records/ Rapster Records
Link http://www.djjazzyjeff.com/
,
www.bbemusic.com and
www.rapsterrecords.com
Root: US/ Hip Hop
Philly's DJ Jazzy Jeff needs no introduction.
After more than 10 million albums sold and 3 Grammy's with Will
"The Fresh Prince" Smith, countless TV appearances
on "the Fresh Prince of Bel Air", it is surprising that
an action figure hasn't yet been made in his image. Action is what
you get plenty of on the Magnificent, the next release in the Beat
Generation series, dedicated to put the emphasis on the hip
hop DJ-producer, and also DJ Jazzy Jeff first solo album, for which
he enlisted MCs, singers and spoken word artist like Jill Scott,
Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men, J-Live, ?uestlove
from the Roots, as well as many artist from his famed production
company A Touch Of Jazz (who recently produced Michael
Jackson's "Butterfly"). The production style is made
of classic chilled jazzy breaks, R&B grooves, and occasionally
wanders off into roughneck territories, covering a wider urban spectrum.
But the shocker comes last with "In Time" featuring the
soulful vocals of V, a collaboration with Masters At Work
delivering 6 minutes of pure deep house bliss, certain to raise
some eyebrows, but ultimately will see everybody happily getting
down.

Artist: SWAYZAK
Title: DIRTY DANCING
Label: !K7 Records
Link: http://www.k7.com/
Root: UK/ Tech Pop-Minimalistic House
Adaptability is key to survival in the dance
music scene. Due to its disposable nature, falling into irrelevance
can happen faster than trying to remember the last burger you ate.
After gaining momentum and critical acclaim with their two previous
albums "Snowboarding In Argentina" and "Himawari",
Swaysak (James Taylor and David Brown) return
with Dirty Dancing, a pop conscious cocktail mixing minimalistic
house and electro, where vocals emulate the rant of 80's favorite
synth pop act, from Soft Cell and Depeche Mode, to
New Order and Gary Newman. Dirty Dancing is the perfect
soundtrack for an S&M bridal shower or a vinyl clad bar mitzvah,
a trend bender without a time machine complex that dares to innovate
without falling into pretentious clichés. By writing the
next chapter into the whole electro-tech pop saga, Swayzak raises
the bar and dares other artists to make a stylistic leap into more
adventurous realms, escape staleness and engage in the ever evolving
process of creating new musical forms for the dance floor.
